A Major Update to Hello Invoice: Work, Projects, and a Better Way to Get Paid

Over the past few of months, we’ve been working on one of the biggest updates to Hello Invoice since launch.

Today, it’s live 🚀

This update isn’t about adding more features for the sake of it. It’s about fixing a problem that most freelancers deal with every single week… whether they realise it or not.

Because the truth is, invoicing doesn’t start with an invoice.

The Problem With Invoicing

If you’re freelancing, your work rarely lives in one place.

It’s spread across messages, emails, quick notes, and mental checklists. You might capture some of it, forget some of it, and tell yourself you’ll “sort it later”.

Then later comes… and you’re trying to piece everything together.

What did I actually do?
What have I already billed?
What’s still missing?

It’s not a great system.

And it leads to the same outcome every time. Things get missed. Time goes unbilled. Invoices take longer to send. Payments get delayed.

It’s not because you’re disorganised. It’s because the tools haven’t really been built around how freelancers actually work.

Introducing Work

Work is a simple way to capture what you’ve done as you go.

Instead of relying on memory or scattered tools, you can quickly log work when it happens and keep everything in one place, ready to invoice later.

There’s no complicated setup or heavy process. It’s designed to be lightweight, so it doesn’t feel like more admin.

At any point, you can see:

  • what’s billable
  • what’s already been invoiced
  • what’s still sitting there waiting

And when you’re ready, you can turn that work into invoice line items in seconds.

No double handling.
No missed items.
No end-of-week scramble.

Introducing Projects

Once you start capturing work properly, the next challenge becomes organisation.

That’s where Projects come in.

Projects bring everything together in a way that just makes sense. Your work, invoices, estimates, and overall billing status all live in one place.

Instead of jumping between different areas of the app or trying to mentally connect the dots, you get a clear, complete view of what’s going on.

What’s been invoiced.
What’s ready to bill.
What’s overdue.

All visible at a glance.

It’s one of those things that sounds simple, but makes a big difference once you start using it.

Know Where You Stand With Every Client

Another key part of this update is better visibility into your clients.

Because not all clients are equal, and it’s important to understand that over time.

Some are consistent. Some are slow to pay. Some bring in more value than others.

With Hello Invoice, you can now see exactly how each client is performing, without digging through old invoices or trying to piece things together manually.

You get a clear picture of:

  • what they’ve paid
  • what’s still outstanding
  • how they’re contributing to your business

It’s simple, but incredibly useful when it comes to making better decisions about your work.

A Better Dashboard

The dashboard has also had a full refresh.

The goal here wasn’t to add more data, but to make the important information easier to understand at a glance.

Revenue, payments, outstanding amounts — everything is clearer, cleaner, and easier to act on.

So instead of checking in occasionally and trying to figure things out, you can stay on top of your finances as part of your normal workflow.

Dark Mode

People have been asking, and now it is here!

This is a smaller addition, but you can now turn on Dark Mode.

Whether you’re working late, early, or just prefer a darker interface, you can now switch to dark mode for a more comfortable experience.

It’s a small change.

But it makes long sessions a lot easier.

A Cleaner, Faster Interface

Alongside the new features, a lot of work has gone into improving the overall experience of using Hello Invoice.

This isn’t a complete redesign but instead a series of small, thoughtful changes that make everything feel clearer, faster, and easier to use day to day.

Navigation has been simplified.
Key actions are easier to find.
Important information is surfaced more clearly.

So instead of clicking around or second-guessing where things live, everything feels more intuitive from the moment you open the app.

It’s the kind of update you don’t have to think about.

It just feels better to use.

What’s Next

This is a big step forward for Hello Invoice, but it’s not the finish line.

Things will keep evolving based on real feedback from people using it every day.

If you’ve already been using Hello Invoice, I really appreciate it.

If you’re new, now’s a great time to take a look.
